Forest fires are raging in Quebec. Nothing worrying for Pointe aux Dorés but the government is closing the entire territory for all or almost the entire month of June.
The year 2023 will be one of all records for the Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU). “The area burned this year in 2023 is higher than the sum of the last 20 years of what was burned in Quebec,” launched its general director, Éric Rousseau, from the outset.
By the end of May, SOPFEU 's operational capacities had already been exceeded , he adds.
SOPFEU recorded a total of 4.5 million hectares of burned forest, including 1.2 million hectares in the intensive protection zone, that is to say south of Lake Mistassini.
I believe that our organization has achieved a real feat.
A quote fromÉric Rousseau, general director of SOPFEU
“[There was] no loss of life and no community, main residence or key infrastructure in Quebec was destroyed”, mentions Mr. Rousseau, who nevertheless recalls that 27,000 people were evacuated due to the fires or the smoke.
